The
CS 101 (Fall 2002)
Programming Contest -- Scary Emote
Announced: Halloween, 31 Oct 2002
Entry Deadline: Monday, 11 November 2002, 4:00 PM (firm)
Goals and Benefits:
All contestants submitting qualified entries will...
- get to put a cool applet on the web to show off to their friends and
relatives. ("See what I did in CS101!")
- raise the blood pressure of their TAs as they recoil in horror
- have a chance to win cool prizes (well, a gift certificate to
the campus book store).
- receive a 10 point extra credit bonus on their lab total.
The top three entries, judged as stated in the rules below, will receive
unusual prizes.
Directions:
In this semester's midterm
CS101 Programming Contest you will spice up your
Emote lab and put it
on the web for the whole world to play. Here's how...
- Be sure that your Lab 2 works. If it doesn't work, doing the
rest of these steps won't help any, so you should go back and fix it first.
- If you want to go for prizes and glory, you should add
features to your Emote so that it becomes very scary when it gets hot,
happy, or both.
Be creative! (Free images and sounds can be found on the web. Fell
free to use those)
- Place your entry on the web so we can execute it as an applet, using
the directions given in class. Get help if you need
it here.
Contest Rules:
- Only students currently enrolled in CS101 may enter the contest. No
employees of CS101 or their families may enter.
- You MUST post your applet on CEC, and nowhere else. We also strongly
recommend you make yourself a CEC homepage.
If you don't already have a home page on CEC, you can go back to Lab 0 and create a home
page.
- All entries must execute properly. If the game doesn't work,
the entry will be disqualified.
- All entries must contain only "G-rated" material. Here, G can include
"gory".
Judges will disqualify entries containing inappropriate language or
media content (even if it is funny). Disqualified entries will
not receive any of the benefits listed above.
- Stealing other people's code, images, or sounds is strictly prohibited.
All submissions
must be your own work, except for the code we have provided for you.
Substantial penalties, beyond disqualification
from the contest, are involved.
- All entries must be received by the date posted above.
To submit your entry, send an email message to cs101@cec.wustl.edu.
The subject of your message should be
"Contest Entry" and your message should contain two lines:
(1) your name, as you want it to appear in the list of contestants,
and (2) the complete URL for accessing your game.
For example,
Subject: Contest Entry
Bob Amar
http://students.cec.wustl.edu/~raa4/FrightFest/applet.html
We are not responsible for lost, spindled, delayed, or
misdirected email. Be sure
that you supply an accurate URL -- duplicate entries will be discarded and
wrong URLs will be disqualified!
- Entries will be judged by a panel of CS101 TAs
on the basis of quality and originality.
The decisions of the judges are final and will be announced at a stirring
but brief
awards ceremony during class. Good Luck!
