Setup

1. Documentation for the software can be found here.
2. Download this cse531.jar file, which needs to stay around for the duration of this assignment.

   Make sure the jar files are saved as .jar files! Internet Explorer tried to save them as zip files in CEC

3. Download this cse531.zip file and put it in a temporary but handy spot (like your Desktop).
4. Installation instructions:
   • Eclipse:
     1. File → New → Project … and choose Java Project. Give it a meaningful name, say CSE531project.
     2. From eclipse, click File → Import … and choose Archive File. Browse to find the cse531.zip file and import it into the CSE531project project you created by clicking Finish
     3. In the Package Explorer, open the CSE531project project.

        Eclipse, in its eagerness, has probably already tried to compile your project, but there are some things it won't find yet.

        Silly eclipse.

        So don't worry about problems just yet.
     4. In some of the files for this lab, there are references to classes that are in the jar file you downloaded. We must make eclipse aware of this:
        1. Click on the CSE531project in the Package Explorer
        2. Click File→Properties
        3. Click Java Build Path
        4. Select the Libraries tab
        5. Click Add External JARs…
        6. Add the cse531.jar file to the list by browsing for the location at which you stored the file.
     5. At this point, or shortly thereafter, all the red flags should go away, as eclipse recompiles the code with the jar file now present.
     6. Open the demos/DataFlow.java file from the Package Explorer.
     7. There seems to be some problem with running in the Europa version of eclipse. Try each of the following, and one should work.
        • Right-click the demos.DataFlow.java entry in the Package Explorer, and go down to Run as → Java Application and let it go. You should see output in the Console window.
        • Right-click the Project name, go down to Run as → Run… and make sure the main program is demos.DataFlow. Click Run.
   • Linux:
     1. Unzip the cse531.zip file
     2. Set the CLASSPATH environment variable to include the cse531.jar file and the classes directory (you may not see it yet, but it will be created by ant; it's OK to set the environment variable now to include it).
     3. Run ant to compile the software.
     4. To run the application: java demos.DataFlow
   • What you should see in the output:

     USAGE: java demos.DataFlow classfile DataFlowFramework
     

   • To see more:
     • You must supply the following JVM argument:

        -Ddebug=true
       

     • And you must supply the class to be analyzed and the data flow framework name as arguments to the application.
     • So...
       • For eclipse, from the Run as → click Run.... From there, click on the Arguments tab and fill in as follows:
         • Program arguments:

           demos/test.class PCESGraph.dataflow.TestFramework
           

         • VM arguments:

            -Ddebug=true
           

       • For Linux, make sure your CLASSSPATH includes the current directory and the classes subdirectory. Then, type:

          java -Ddebug=true  demos.DataFlow  classes/demos/test.class PCESGraph.dataflow.TestFramework

     Assignment

     You are free to work on this project in teams provided you have cleared this with the instructor.

     You are to pick a data flow problem and solve it using the supplied software. You are welcome to come up with your own problem, but you must clear that with the instructor before you begin.

     Single-person projects include:

     • Live variables (local vars only)
     • Reaching defs (local vars only)
     • How much stack? problem

     Two-person projects

     • Register allocation (with live vars)
     • Constant propagation (with stack modeling)
     • Value numbering (with stack modeling)

     An example bogus framework is given in the files found at PCESGraph/dataflow/Test*. You are to modify that framework to solve your problem.

     When you are done, you must submit the following:

     • A write-up of your data flow framework. Describe the lattice, whether the problem is rapid or not, whether the problem is distributive or not. Include any implementation details or notes. This can appear in the header of the TestFramework class.
     • The entire project as a zip file.
     • A testfile with at least 3 methods to show off your work. Please call this testmystuff.java and put it in the demos package.
