The CEC (Center for Engineering Computing) lab in Lopata Hall, room 400, is reserved for CS514 students during scheduled lab times -- in other words, people doing non-CS514 related work in these rooms during CS514 lab sections are required to give up their computers to CS514 students if no other computers are available during the section. If you have questions or complaints about the CEC workstations that cannot be resolved by the teaching staff in your lab section, please bring them to the attention of the CEC Help Center in Sever 214.
All systems in Lopata 400 are Sun SPARC Ultra-10s, all running Solaris 2.7. While you should find a thorough environment for programming in all languages on these machines, if you wish to use a different OS (such as Windows NT, offered in the other CEC labs), please inform the instructor.
Available computers in Lopata 400 display a rectangular graphic in the middle of the screen saying the machine name in large letters. There is a spot for you to enter your username; do so, and then type your account password.

Do not share your password with anyone! Failure to adequately
maintain the security of your account may cause delays in service for all
lab users and have severe consequences beyond account
termination.
You may issue the command netscape at the UNIX prompt, or if
you are in the Common Desktop Environment, you may launch a browser by
clicking either on the globe icon in the middle of the taskbar, or on the
globe clock on the left side of the taskbar.

location.
Remember to logout when you are finished! If you are in OpenWindows, you can click the "Logout" button on your desktop. If you are in the Common Desktop Environment, you can click the "EXIT" button on the taskbar.
CEC serves many classes besides CS514, and the labs can be very busy. Remember that the only time you are guaranteed a computer is during your own lab section. Plan ahead so that you don't find yourself unable to get to a computer the night before you need to have something ready.
