NOTE: Tuesday you have a javascript lecture from Rebecca and Travis
Thursday you have a reprieve. I am still going to be in DC. Just email
me your URL's and we will have a list ready for Friday. So FRIDAY the 7th
you will come in and score your peers' work, for REAL. I may have a skills
lab on the 7th and probably will have a second assignment ready, which
will be a text and graphics competition to be judged by the TA's.

^COME IN AND SCORE YOUR PEERS' WORK AND HAVE A SKILLS LAB
Fri Sep 30
HERE'S WHAT I NEED YOU TO DO TODAY:
1. Have a look at the following URL's and tell the TA your score and any
comments you have. These were the people who didn't get to present their work
on Thursday because we ran out of time.
TEAM members: brennan faith
URL: http://cec.wustl.edu/~fs1/assignment1.html
TEAM members: Helen Kai
URL: http://userfs.cec.wustl.edu/~hcc1/Homepage.jpg
TEAM members: Sara M
URL: http://userfs.cec.wustl.edu/~sam3/splash.html
TEAM members: Phil H
URL: http://userfs.cec.wustl.edu/~pjh1/Phil.html
2. Have a look at the file online which shows scores and comments compiled
from Thursday's class. I want you to do this AFTER you do #1 of course.
For today I have hidden it somewhere on my cs100 directory. I'll move it
back into the cs104 directory next week. Remember, this is mostly
a guide to you on how people react to designs -- sometimes they sharply
agree that it is good, sometimes they sharply disagree; sometimes they
have diffuse agreement or diffuse disagreement. Like my statistical
metaphors?
3. Join with the TA's and your fellow students to improve your site. Perhaps
you could introduce some of the links as buttons IN THE MAIN DESIGN if you
need more of a challenge. I would say that most efforts are lacking
graphics and text. Splash page, yes, but these days front pages have more
information and less splash.
CLASS COMMENTS:
CS104 Assigment 1 PREVIEW URL'S
(please don't change them as you revise your
site -- use a new URL for your revisions)
TEAM members: jimi jenny
URL: http://cec.wustl.edu/~jnb1/splash.html
comments: good, i love the text being blown
like the nav on the brush stroke, a lot of center,
questionable edge consistency on images,
midwestern dollars?, content looks good,
images look good, lightweight links at bottom,
think about using texture somewhere? or go
completely for clean? clear what's being conveyed
TEAM members: prack flessner
URL: http://userfs.cec.wustl.edu/~jpp2/john%20&%20john.html
comments: too much color, one person doesn't like
the spacing of images at bottom, i think this is perfect,
white space below box a bit puzzling, the color bar
gets a bit tiring to look at, some are bugged by
the inconsistency of the black field behind the buttons
IS THERE A COLOR SCHEME HERE? starburst? some question
image choices.
TEAM members: james pushpa
URL: http://userfs.cec.wustl.edu/~jlp5/Italy%20webpage.html
comments: biggest weakness is top font and letter spacing
main picture not off-peak, boxes bottoms' don't align,
but are symmetrically unaligned! white?
too much space at top, main image color? is it
a strong image? fonts in general need work
better than what camogli's got right now,
like the banner/flag button-top theme
TEAM members: phil ji-yae
URL: http://cec.wustl.edu/~jh15/ss.html
comments: obviously unfinished/unpolished,
i love colors, font, and spanish, bgcolor
is reflected in the surf! main image is great
but too big -- needs thought in layout, but
3 pic layout is neat, header could be on a banner,
maybe a 3-column with text would layout the images well,
TEAM members: lizzie erica
URL: http://cec.wustl.edu/~ear2/San Sebastian.html
comments: i like the blending, i hate the blending
of pictures at top, maybe a bg color, text on image
is swell, but white bg... hard to read text (deliberate?)
someone thought text short, text to top of pic?
design has no place for buttons, consistent
relaxed feel, relationship of font sizes not right,
someone thought text justification would help,
title could be on different color bg,
content of text seems appropriate to presentation
TEAM members: christina
URL: http://userfs.cec.wustl.edu/~cjh3/Splash.html
comments: way too many fonts, but camogli font is exc,
location of campogli? looks like a menu -- go for it?
swap romance and camogli? z composition!
word selection under pictures or size selection
to fit? no locale-specific info, inconsistent
pic corners, i like the old paper look, i am not
entirely happy with the way it sits on bg, alignment
of text...
TEAM members: thomas catherine
URL: http://cec.wustl.edu/~ttk2/splash.html
comments: gorgeous, beautiful, ...
i think it looks like a car ad, very trendy/fading-trend
graphics ideas, but fresh overlay! some overhang
seems accidental instead of deliberate, one has
problem with NICE placement, not obvious for beach
or resort, two diagonals weakened by blue nav area?
nightlifey idea is strong, one dislikes NICE font,
text with images? links should be in english?
wish the beach could continue, NICE placement again...
TEAM members: ale alex
URL: http://userfs.cec.wustl.edu/~ah3/Mock%20up-Final.jpg
comments: too much space, too much brown,
shell looks like a night light, menu on the left
better? menu is crowded, i like these rounded edges,
leah has a suggestion for cutting images in a clever
more thematic way, no texture!, main text font
looks good but hard to read, one doesn't like the banner font,
would the shell work if smaller?
TEAM members: jason sam
URL: http://cec.wustl.edu/~jr11/project1.html
comments: too much space at the top, esp between
title n text, image consistency, stylistically
and selection-lly, sane selection of text content,
top font is tres risky, too many fonts?, menu font
too big, someone likes the green shadow
TEAM members: Nainesh SHuddie
URL: http://userfs.cec.wustl.edu/~njs1/splash.html
comments: font stuff at top risk that didn't pay,
i like layout, but simple, off-peak? looks ppt,
alignment dynamic says what to me? looks corp presentation,
too much blu, shadow on box? for the audience, maybe not far off
shadow at top and bottom? postcard idea works if you work it

comments: Image too small, maybe add some texture to the
background, nice pictures, like the layout. Nice font, maybe make
the "Estoril, Portugal" larger. Way too plain, more texture, too
square, very nice pictures, very relaxing. Could keep the layout,
but just make more lively. The white space at the top is odd,
perhaps relation should just be "relax", I like the colors. The
composition works, but maybe a menu at the right side of the page
would be appropriate? i'm not sure people will appreciate how
there's not much content on the page. seems basic. I liked the
buttons, but not how the framed 2 sides of picture, image choice?
not sized well, image placing on buttons, buttons themselves seem
bland. colors go well together. sand texture clashes with large
picture, main picture too big, open space in bottom left corner.
image is strong, button format is inconsistent, different shades
of brown contrast, not tight enough, need frame for header, bevel
on buttons, brown blends too much w

comments: Like it a lot, lettering hard to read. Great row
of buttons. I don't really like the font of the body in this
contest. The menu bar seems a little large. The fading of the
background is interesting, but I think it may be more effective if
it doesn't fade to such a dim color. The picture should probably
align with the text, either the same length or centered. love the
right side graphic, text is hard to read on the page, clearer
images, like the boxiness. nice layout, like the picture cutouts,
the font is hard to read, too small & pixelated. Like the fade of
the background image, maybe spread the font a bit more. Very
nice. incredible page, very well done in every regard. nice font
on buttons, font maybe a little too hard to read to use for main
body, stylistic image on the right is nice, but why the color
contrast? very nice, buttons are nice, looks like a fancy hotel
resort, looks rich. fonts are too small, should be offset with
buttons/borders, transparency? bigger font

comments: very nice! img needs to be wider to fit the 1024
screen resolution. love the font, picture could be brighter, all
of the buttons look the same. little pic @ bottom should be
bigger, love the layout of pic and text links below, check
spelling in text. I love this site! the graphics are beautiful!
maybe change up the smaller building images. i like the color
scheme, bigger "Camogli, Italy". I like the arrangement of the
buttons, title and picture, but I think maybe the text for the
buttons isn't the best choice, and it looks kinda sloppy. i like
the two column layout. i think the color of the buttons could be
chosen better. good colors, good layout. AWesome depiction of
off season, maybe center whole. pictures used for buttons are
weak, text is not centered well on navagation bad. the color
scheme is good, very soothing. good main image and font, nice how
writing overlaps image, "maps" isn't centered, do not understand
the pictures of buildings in the buttons. brighten pho
