CSE132 Announcements

See the top of the list for the most recent announcements.

There will be a make-up lecture on April 24, 10-11:30 in Lab Sciences 250 to discuss design patterns and the format/content of the final exam.

Based on peer voting on April 8, the following teams have been selected to give an 8-minute presentation of their application during class on Tuesday, April 22. (If you do not have a laptop for the presentation, let me know.)

Roger Alessi, Eli Lasker, Danny Sear
John Appel, Clifton Carey
Walker Burgin, Stephanie Volftsun
Joshua Glatt, Gordon Sommers
Rachel Herman, Craig Szczesuil

OPEN DEMOS ON APRIL 8: On Tuesday April 8, the day your Lab 3 lab packet is due, we will doing "open demos" in lab section. This will work as follows:

  1. When you arrive in lab, both you and your partner should find two adjacent computers, log in and start up your application.
  2. During the first 45 minutes of lab, one of you will stay with your demo, while the other one will go around to see the projects of other teams. Then you will switch places.
  3. The primary purpose is to see a variety of projects and to provide constructive feedback and critique.
  4. The secondary purpose is to vote for the "best" projects from each lab section to give a general presentation to the entire class during lecture on April 22. Teams elected to give presentations will get a 5 point extra credit bonus on the lab for doing the presentation. We will explain the voting procedure in lab section on April 8. (You are welcome to visit other lab sections that day, but you can only vote in your own lab section. You can also invite a friend, but they are not allowed to vote. Please don't invite more than one extra person, though, or the room will get very crowded.)

No quiz on March 25. The readings (Liskov Ch. 11 and Core Java Volume II Chapters 6 and 7) do not lend themselves to a quiz, since they are not conceptually deep. However, both contain ideas that you might find helpful in your design and implementation work. Spring Break: There will not be office hours or TA consulting hours from Friday, March 7 through Sunday, March 16. The regular schedule will resume Monday, March 17.

See this review sheet for the midterm exam on Tuesday, March 4.

Because of the midterm, there will not be a quiz on Tuesday, March 4. (The quiz on Liskov Ch. 10 and Core Java Vol II, pp. 48-84 will be held on March 18 after Spring Break.)

On Quiz 4, it has come to my attention that Question 1 from the Core Java book came from outside of the pages that I suggested you concentrate on. To handle this QuizQuestionOutOfBoundsException: If you missed Question 1 from the Core Java book on Quiz 4 and you were able to answer any of the other questions, then I will assume that you did the reading conscientiously and restore credit for Question 1. To get the credit restored, just put a note to me at the top of the quiz, and hand it to me in class or lab section.

Because there has been a lot of illness going around, I have decided to drop the two lowest quizzes, instead of just one. This should provide enough flexibility so that if you don't feel well, you can just stay home and rest up.

In general, there will be a quiz every Tuesday morning over the previous week's reading assignment. Use this reading guidance to help you know what parts of the reading assignment to concentrate on.

Get a headset and microphone: Our first project will involve audio recording and playback. Please get a (cheap) analog headset and microphone, each with an 1/8" jack. You could either get a combination headset that has a mic on it and two jacks, or you could get a separate headset and mic. You may already have a headset, and some airlines give them away. Most electronics stores would have a mic for about $5. Aim for something small so you can carry it easily in a pouch of your backpack.

Lab partner requests: Projects in CSE132 will be done with an assigned lab partner. If you want to work with a particular student, make sure that you are in the same lab section and write your request on a sheet of paper and give it to me on the first day of class, at the end of lecture. Both of you should sign the request. Make sure you also print your names legibly. I can't guarantee that I will honor all requests, but will do so where it works out.

Lab scheduling: Lab section B (Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:30-4:00) is very full. If you can move to one of the other lab sections (A or C), it would be appreciated, and you will get more attention.
