Optical Networking: Recent Developments, Issues, and Trends

IEEE Distinguished Lecture by Prof. Raj Jain April 10, 2003, Orange County, CA, May 27-29, 2003, Atlanta, Charleston, SC, Columbia SC, Raleigh, NC.

ABSTRACT

In the year 2002, there has been a significant shift in optical networking industry. The technologies that were hot in 2000 are no longer seen promising. What this shift is and what is happening now?

While Ethernet is trying to replace SONET/SDH in the carrier networks, SONET itself is changing to better meet the new demands of data traffic. Which technology is best for metro networks: Ethernet or next-gen SONET?

IP and Ethernet everywhere are well known trends. However, the telecom revenue is still predominantly from leased line services. What approaches are being proposed to overcome this problem?

These and other issues will be discussed in this talk designed to entertain both networking and non-networking professionals.
