Traffic Management is the key feature of ATM that distinguishes it from current networking protocols and makes it suitable for deployment in high-speed networks and for providing performance guarantees in an integrated environment.

ATM Forum has developed three different service categories for data: Available Bit Rate (ABR) service using explicit feedback, Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR) with no best effort (no guarantees), and Guaranteed Frame Rate (GFR) with minimum throughput guarantees.

Issues in performance of TCP/IP over each of these three services will be presented. Ways to improve the performance will also be discussed. In case of GFR, design issues related to buffering and queueing will be described.

Quality of service in IP is being provided with Integrated Services, RSVP, Differentiated Services, and MPLS. Issues with these approaches will also be discussed.
