This is a comprehensive research program for the design of enhanced ATM Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR) hardware technologies and their interworking with current and future TCP protocols. Our focus will be on TCP performance over UBR and its enhancements for large delay-bandwidth networks. we plan to design modifications at the ATM layer and at the transport layer to ensure good performance levels. Based on this study, we propose to (a) develop guidelines for choosing protocol parameters to achieve the best performance in specific environments, and (b) design and implement new schemes or modify existing protocol mechanisms to optimize performance.
