We plan to analyze both the existing video compression standard, MPEG2, as well as an innovative new method of video-data compression for transport via ATM networks. MPEG2 uses timestamps to synchronize the audio and video bit streams. However, it assumes a constant path delay. ATM networks introduce delays that are variable and random. Also, MPEG2 is not very loss-resistant. We plan to develop an alternative compression scheme and compare it with MPEG2.
