Faculty PositionsWashington University is a leading private national university with approximately 11,000 students and exceptional professional schools in medicine, engineering, business, law, architecture, social work, and fine arts. The Department of Computer Science is in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, has about 150 undergraduate majors, 80 graduate students, 18 regular faculty, and annual external research funding in the range of $4.8 million. The department and its associated research laboratories have exceptional and continuously expanding facilities to support computing research including: over 150 workstations and file servers; a twenty processor Sun System 2000 multiprocessor and a Convex supercomputer; a computer visualization laboratory with high-performance SGI graphics workstations and broadcast quality video production capabilities; a large experimental ATM network supporting a broad range of applications including multimedia networking among faculty offices and selected laboratories, video storage and retrieval, full rate video distribution, video conferencing, electronic radiology, etc. The Department has strong collaborative relations with important industrial concerns world wide and continues to be successful in transferring research results to industrial use.
Research areas in which the department enjoys high levels of visibility and critical mass are: networking and communications; distributed computing and object-oriented software technologies; graphics, visualization, and human interfaces; artificial intelligence; computer architecture and engineering; theoretical computer science; and computational science with emphasis on biomedical applications. The department plans to grow in order to expand its research and graduate programs and its areas of primary strength, while continuing to enhance its excellent undergraduate program. The department seeks outstanding candidates whose research is directed towards solving important problems in computer science and technology. This year's recruiting effort will focus on communications, distributed computing, and visualization. Candidates with backgrounds in database, security, and multimedia are of particular interest to our department at this time.
